Politics has seen various kinds of promotional campaigns used by political parties and its leaders to catch attention but very rarely has Indian politics seen something like 'fans of a politician launching a smartphone in the name of that political leader' as tribute to the contribution made by him and the difference that only he can bring to the nation.
A group, claiming to be 'Independent fans of Sh. Narendra Modi' has launched a 'NaMo' android smartphone that will soon be available in the market.
NaMo, is short for Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister of Gujarat and seen as the big contender for Prime Minister in the forthcoming general elections in 2014. The group says on its website "We are fans of Sh. Narendra Modi, our forthcoming future leader of our great nation India, we are manufacturing latest android handset dedicated to IRONMAN of modern India".
The website currently does not display specifications in full but what it does share is, the smartphone will sport a 5-inch Coring Glass 2 display and will be powered by a 1.5 Ghz processor. It will possess a 13 MP camera to go with 1-3 GB RAM and 16-64 GB storage capacity options.
The pricing details are not out as yet and but the grapevine suggests that it will be priced below INR 20,000. From the available information, it is very evident that the group intends to import smartphones from China, brand it, re-pack it and sell in India.
Whatever be the model, whatever be the fate of this smartphone is the already super packed market of smartphone, one thing that stands out is the uniqueness of the idea. Is this really meant to support Narendra Modi or is it meant to capture market using his brand is debatable.
