I am a Delhiite and why i bring this first, ahead of main content is that while writing this blog i come with an inherent mindset that i carry from being a Delhiite i.e a city known for its over the top show off skills but very less known for its art.
Travelling around Delhi.. seeing graffiti across walls, subways etc makes me think (knowing the fact that, its not permissible in our land) .. "How interesting it will be, if Graffiti is made Legal ?"
Everything from pin to plane comes with its set of positives and negatives ...
Thinking about Positives ... Lots of them ... like ..
1. It could be a very strong way by which public can express emotions for / against likes and dislikes.
2. It surely is a fine way to display your art public. Talent Unlimited !
3. Also, it beautifies the look and feel of place .. the entire ambience of the place would lift up.
and the list continues .... As they say .. a picture is worth thousand words ... arguably the best medium to convey anything and everything.
Heads, i agree that Graffiti should be made legal ... Tail, i tend to get convinced that this form of art comes with a lot of caution and in country like ours, where Politics is the heart of most things .. this form of art will soon be caught in web of politics and before it could convey its artistic reach, it would be used to demean rival parties ..
If spared from all this, which is very unlikely, a badly done Graffiti could spoil the place like sick ! and imagine, as a shopkeeper .. one fine morning your shutter is all colorful with an unwanted shady piece of display... which bring me to the point and which i genuinely believe, Graffiti is experts arena only.
Imagining legalised Graffiti in a democratic land would mean .. you would encounter Graffitis (if you would like to call them ;) ) like "Mona, I love you" ... "Sheila, fuck you" or some phone number ...
I think we can go ahead with a Graffiti competition sort of which would mean we are inviting talent from all across and putting it on display for recognition... and there can be many more ways to bring Graffiti to life in Country like ours...

Well I think you have made a very good point....Graffiti should be made legal but only if people use it in a creative and expressive manner...just using a wall to express your anger or love for someone is a waste....Organizing Graffiti competition is also good idea to give people a chance to show their talent,ideas or creations..

At least a fair chance should be given to those who possess it....

I saw a wall with a beautiful graffiti work done here in dwarka yet no one bothers and some idiots leave their 'thela' and rickshaw their this completely hiding it. Its one thing legalizing it and then making sure assholes don't ruin the experience its another if it went unappreciated. And as for political you know its gonna happen. Btw we already have more than enough graffiti of pan and pee stained walls or historical monuments defaced with shit like 'jaanu loves shona' inside a heart. Its not about legislation as much as development of a culture for such thing
ReplyDeleteWhile I am a huge admirer of graffitti art and believe that if used sensibly it can be an amazing way of expression and spreading social messages.. But yeah prevailing immaturity among some people cannot be ignored - I think legalizing graffitti can have absurd consequences! However, I think if certain subways/ walls are alloted to fine arts department of the university along with some theme - it would be a great platform for the budding artists to express themselves, convey the message in the most creative ways..! No cost for the government and it would make environment so live and colorful.. Why should an art form bear the brunt of few spoliers - atleast till how long??
