If you could think of anything when someone said "Blackberry" it had to be "BBM" that would first strike your mind.
One big big attraction to buy Blackberry phone is BBM. Sort of strange fashion, i guess esp. with Whatsapp around. (Refer -BBM vs WhatsApp) Now, if that one major attracton is being shared, selflessly, by RIM with mobile consumers of the world.. i am sure BB handsets will have to find another attraction to survive.
Does this mean - begining of the end of RIM as BB (handset) maker? or Does this mean - a new lifeline ? Only time will tell ...
Clearly, this move gives a new edge to RIM in the services arena which might contribute to the growth of the company. With many new entrants in the cross-platform messaging service line, BBM - an already established name can very well over shadow and kill any chance of their success.
Rolling out of BBM to multiple platforms can prove to be a double-edged sword. With hardware not being their USP ever expect for the QWERTY keypad pulling few consumers, BBM was their best bet.
Support
Going by the announcement by RIM, BBM will be supported on devices running on Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwhich) or iOS 6.0 or higher.
Cost
The big news is - BBM shall be free of cost, Yes ! free of cost and facilitate cross-platform messaging between BB, Android and Apple users. Considering BBM is free of cost, how would this move impact revenue line of RIM positively remains to be seen. Some hidden charges? May be.
Reach
BBM currently boasts of over 60 Million users.
iMessage goes far and high with over 140 Million users.
WhatsApp - newest entry in the messaging world - has over hundereds of millions users with over 10 million messgaes being exchanged daily.
Now, when you look at the above facts.. one thing is for sure, Whatsapp is supremo and one colossal reason that stands its backbone is being "cross-platform" i.e. being present on multiple platforms like Windows, Android, Symbian and even BB10. Now, when RIM via BBM tries to replicate the same success, it surely stands threat to Whatsapp.
Blackberry CEO, Thorsten Heins said that he believed the major differentiator between BBM and Whatsapp is - BBM is FREE ! But one obstacle that BBM might face is pulling users to remember or share PIN number. Whatsapp and iMessage users are not habitual of concept of using PIN.
Will have to wait and watch to see impact of BBM on the crowded live messaging space. I think BBM might uncrown Whatsapp. What's your take ? Will you shift to BBM?

With the likes of Whatsapp, Chaton, Wechat or India's own Hike. BBM can no longer be a valid reason to buy Blackberry, and buying such a device solely for the BBM in today's time would be considered imprudent. However BBM opening its floodgates to apple and android users could help increase its Brand Value again as there are millions of BBM users and I feel others would gladly join in to the oldest messenger. And if it's free then Whatsapp may have something to worry.
